November Newsletter

Endeavor Hall Volunteer Organization
November 2012
Hello EH families!

The 2012-2013 school year has kicked off with a great start.  We hope that you and your students have enjoyed the activities held so far this year and are looking forward to our future events!

Summary
The following is a summary of what we’ve done thus far:
1st Quarter:  Carnival & Walk a Thon, Spirit Week events, SEP lunches and Scholastic Book Fair, Chick-Fil-A Spirit Night, and VO quarterly meeting
2nd Quarter:  So far in the 2nd quarter we’ve had the Red Ribbon Week including Safety Fair/ Anti-Bullying and Drug Free and Stranger Danger assemblies. October 31st brought again our annual Halloween Carnival, and that was a great success. We hope that your students enjoyed these events.  Our wonderful students and teachers decorated their classroom doors for Red Ribbon week.  We are extending the voting for classroom doors until Friday, November 9th.  Parents, please come in before or after school to vote on your favorite door.  We have some very creative students and teachers here at Endeavor Hall!

Future Events
Inspirations:  Inspirations is an art contest for charter schools in Utah.  The theme for this year is “Beauty is...”  The categories in which students can enter are: visual art, photography, musical composition, theatre, literature, 3-D art, film/video, choreography/dance, and digital art.  You can see all the details at www.charterinspirations.blogspot.com.  Entries are due to the front office November 30, 2012.

Free Vision Screening:  We will be conducting a free vision screening at Endeavor Hall. We provide screening for many eye problems especially amblyopia or lazy-eye blindness, a condition which is the leading cause of blindness in children and must be corrected by the time a child reaches 7 years of age. If your child wears glasses be sure they are wearing the glasses at the screening. It will be held November 19-20, 2012.

Thanksgiving Break (No School): November 22-23.

Teacher Inservice Day (No School): November 26.

Volunteers Needed
Writer in Residence is one of the innovative programs at Endeavor Hall.  As part of this program, nationally published authors are frequently at the school working with the students.  We are in need of volunteers to help while the authors are here.  This will provide you the opportunity to work with your students’ grades and with some of our authors.  More than two volunteers are always welcome, though we can make do with two in each class.  The more responders, the more attention and response each student receives--plus it gives experience to parents in how to respond constructively to their kids' writing.  If you would like to volunteer to help with this, please sign up here:  www.SignUpGenius.com/go/5080F44AEAF28A46-writer or contact Debbie Domenici at DebraDomenici@gmail.com or 801-634-5557.  We need help with these starting on November 12 and the list is regularly being updated.  Please check back often!

Room Parents:  The purpose of the room parent is to help the teacher with coordinating parent volunteers, plan and organize parties/events/culminating activities and help the teacher to find creative ways to reduce their extra-curricular work load and involve parents.  Most of this can be done from home.  It is helpful for the teachers to have people make copies for them or help prepare items for the classroom, come in and read with the students, help with classroom enhancement projects (such as Colonial Days, Inspirations projects, Cinco de Mayo, etc.).  The teachers could coordinate what activities they have coming up in their classroom and what donations or help they need for them or if they have an upcoming field trip.  The room parent could then prepare the correspondence about what is needed, the teachers sends it to the families, and the families contact the room parents.  This will help reduce some of the extra work that our teachers need to do.  We still need room parents for the following teachers:
            Jones             2nd Grade
Davis 2nd Grade
            Vietti             4th Grade
Barnett 4th Grade
                       Gause                Math
            Daughtery      Language Arts
Bankhead Careers and Technical Education

If you would like to volunteer to help with any of our events and have not had an opportunity to sign up yet, please send an email to DebraDomenici@gmail.com and we will add you to our list!

Other News
Cinch Sacks and Water Bottles:  We still have EH cinch sacks and water bottles available for sale.  These would make great Christmas presents!  These are very nice and good quality materials, and can be used often in your students classrooms. The teachers would love to have students leaving their classrooms less often to visit the drinking fountain, and another reusable bag (or several) to keep handy are always useful at home or school!  You may purchase cinch sacks for $10 each and water bottles for $5 each.  If you are interested, please notify us at DebraDomenici@gmail.com and we can arrange to get these to you.

Facebook: We have two Facebook pages that you can visit to get up to date information about upcoming events and incidents at the school. Please “Like” the following pages to stay informed:  Endeavor Hall and Endeavor Hall Eagle Power.

Box Tops and Campbell's Soup Labels: Endeavor Hall does collect Box Tops and Campbell's Soup Labels.  We hold contests throughout the year to encourage donations.  The jar will be by the front office.  Please take the extra few minutes to trim the excess from the labels and logos so that we don’t waste money on shipping the extra weight.  Place them in a small baggie with your student’s name and the teacher’s name.

THANK YOU!  The Board would like to thank all of you for your donations of items and time to help with our activities thus far this year, especially our recent Safety Fair, Halloween Carnival and other Red Ribbon Week activities!

We hope you have a wonderful November!

October 2012
Hello EH families!

The 2012-2013 VO has a lot of plans for the year, and we are excited to serve with you as we help our children learn and grow at this wonderful school.  The 1st quarter has been an exciting kick off to a great year!

If you would like to volunteer to help with any of our events and have not had an opportunity to sign up yet, please send an email to DebraDomenici@gmail.com and we will add you to our list!

Congratulations
Food Drive We want to congratulate Ms. Fairbourn’s 1st grade and Ms. Maybury’s 5th grade classes for bringing in the most items during our food drive for Spirit Week.  They received a pizza party for their great work!
Cheer We would like to congratulate Lindsey for submitting our winning cheer entry:
Write!  Write!  Write!  That’s how we take flight!  Gooooooo Eagles!
Great job Lindsey!

October Events
Chick-fil-A Spirit Night is Tuesday October 16 5:30-7:30 PM! We are so excited to hold this at the Jordan Landing Chick-fil-A which is located at 7676 Campus View Drive, West Jordan, Utah. We held it at this location last year and it went incredibly well as a night to raise funds for our school! The school will receive 20% of all purchases.  All funds received by the school will go toward the playground for our school!  Fliers and stickers will be sent home with the students on Tuesday.  These fliers or stickers need to be given to the cashier for the school to receive credit for your purchase!

UEA Fall Break is October 18 and 19.

End of Quarter Early Dismissal October 26, school will dismiss at 12:40.

Red Ribbon Week/Halloween is being held October 29th-November 2nd. We will be having a student Fall Safety Fair Monday October 29, Drug Awareness & Anti-Bullying assemblies Friday November 2,  and of course our annual lunchtime Halloween Carnival October 31st for our students to enjoy! To volunteer for any of the committees for the events, please contact Debbie Domenici at debradomenici@gmail.com.

Writer in Residence is one of the innovative programs at Endeavor Hall.  As part of this program, nationally published authors are frequently at the school working with the students.  We are in need of volunteers to help while the authors are here.  If you are interested in helping please contact us at debradomenici@gmail.com.

Other News
Room Parents: We still have a need for a few room parents.  If you are interested in helping your student’s teacher with coordinating parent volunteers, plan and organize parties/events/culminating activities and help the teacher to find creative ways to reduce their extra-curricular work load and involve parents.

Playground: As everyone may have heard, our school recently was the recipient of a $15,000 grant from the Dr. Pepper/ Snapple group to use toward a playground structure. Part of the grant’s mission is to create a community centered project. This play structure will be planned and built by volunteers who are committed to our school.  In order to accept this gift, one of the conditions of the grant is that the school needs to raise at least another $10,000 for the equipment by spring 2013. Of course the more money we raise over that, the larger the play structure will be.  After our carnival, we still have approximately $6100 to raise or $10.16 per student. We are well on our way!

To that end, we have some EH cinch sacks and water bottles available for sale. If you are interested in purchasing these, please notify us at DebraDomenici@gmail.com and we can arrange to get these to you.

Endeavor Hall Directory: We are putting together a Family Directory of our Endeavor Hall families. This free directory is to be used for school purposes only, and will only be distributed to Endeavor Hall families. Participation is completely voluntary, and not required, but the more who participate, the more useful it will be. You share as much or as little information as you would like.

This directory will enable you to contact other families:
  • If your student forgot their book at school and needs to finish their homework;
  • If your student is sick and wants to stay caught up with the class;
  • So invitations for parties can be sent directly to classmates’ homes; or
  • If you would like to schedule a playdate with your child’s classmates.

If you are interested in participating in our Family Directory, please go online to http://bit.ly/EHFamilyList and complete the information there by October 31st. If you have any questions, please contact us at DebraDomenici@gmail.com.

Facebook: We have two Facebook pages that you can visit to get up to date information about upcoming events and incidents at the school, such as last month’s gas leak.

THANK YOU!  The Board would like to thank all of you for your donations of items and time to help with our activities thus far this year, especially for our Walk-a-thon and Carnival, Spirit Week, SEP lunch, and Writer in Residence!

Have a wonderful month of October! Thank you so much for all your help!

April Newsletter

Endeavor Hall Volunteer Organization
                                   April 2012

The last quarter of school has arrived!  So far it’s been an incredible first year.  A big thanks to all of you for your contributions and support.  We truly believe that our EH family is the BEST.

Have you seen our students “EH” picture hanging in the front foyer?  As part of Spirit Week they were formed into the letters of our school, and a picture was taken from the roof.  The students and staff all loved this fun way to commemorate our school’s first year.  If you’re interested, you can order an 8x10 copy through the front office.  Put cash or checks written to Endeavor Hall in an envelope ( $5 each picture).  Then put your name and a child's name on the envelope with the number of pictures you would like.  Then turn it in to the office by April 27th.

VO Officer Elections (closed)
It's time to elect the VO officers for the 2012-13 school year.  If you are interested in serving on the Volunteer Organization board please submit your name and a paragraph about you no later than April 27th at the end of the school day to Chantelle.  Winners will be announced on May 7.

Volunteer Opportunities & Upcoming Events
We have many fun activities planned during the last few weeks of school and we will need a lot of help if they’re all going to be amazing.  If you can help in any way with any of the following things, please contact us as asked.

Teacher Appreciation Week:  May 7-11th
We have definitely been blessed by our outstanding teachers!  Information will be coming home soon from your child’s Room Parent with ideas on how you can thank them.  We hope you will at least take the time to say “thank you.”

Mommies & Muffins:  May 14th
We would like to invite the moms or grandma’s or aunts etc. in our students lives to join them in the school cafeteria for a light breakfast the day after Mother’s Day.  Come have some yummy muffins then take time to read together before school starts.  We’ll be ready for you from 7:20-7:50am.  If you would like to help with this event, please comment below.

Author Night:  May 18th
Would you like the opportunity to hear from and meet the authors who have been working with your student?  How about other local authors?  You’re all invited to our 1st annual Author Night.  During this evening you will also be able to purchase titles from our authors and have them signed.  This event will be open to the public and held at Taylorsville City Hall, so bring your friends and family.  Watch for the weekly flyer you’ll be emailed with author information and event updates.

We will need quite a lot of help to run this event.  If you are interested in getting involved, please comment below.

Field Day:  June 5th
The last day of school can bring many emotions to our children.  And since our families are spread throughout the valley the anticipation of missing friends could be greater than usual.  So keeping with tradition of many of our neighborhood schools, we’re going to spend time the last day of school having some enormous fun.  Volunteers will be needed for games and kiddo management.  If you would like to help with this, please comment below.

Reminders
Has your child had a chance to join the Birthday Book Club?  To celebrate their birthday, have them give a copy of their favorite book to our library.  Or, ask our amazing librarian for a suggestion.  Birthday Book Club labels are available in the front office and in the library.  If you have questions about this “club,” please comment below.

There is always a Box Tops collection bin in the front lobby & our Green Fiber Recycling bin has plenty of room in it!  These are easy ways to generate funds for our school.

Thank you for all you do!  Have a stellar month!

Your VO officers, Celeste, Pam, Debbie, Brittney & Chantelle

March Newsletter

Endeavor Hall Volunteer Organization

March 2011

We had an AMAZING February at Endeavor Hall! Spirit Week was filled with activities that unified our student body. Literacy Week promoted reading and writing in multiple ways. We had another fabulous Book Fair, and our teachers loved their meals during SEP’s. We owe a huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped during these events. We love our Endeavor Hall family! Thank you.

Upcoming Events

Has your student told you about the things they have been doing with our authors? Our unique and incredible Writer in Residence program is going very well. We know that many of you would love to meet the authors involved. Please mark your calendars for Friday, May 18th. Endeavor Hall will present its first annual Author Night that evening. Planning has already begun and we are so very excited! More details will come soon.

Because of Spring Break, the next Casual Conversations breakfast will be held on the 2nd Friday in April, April 13th from 7:45 – 8:45am at the McDonalds on 5600 W and 3500 S. We’ve enjoyed visiting with those who have so far been able to come. We’ll be hanging out near the play area. Hope to see you there.

The State Inspirations award assembly will be held on March 30th at Providence Hall. If your student will be participating at this level, you’ll receive details about the night as soon as the hosting school passes them on to us.

We will be holding elections for our Volunteer Organization officers in May. Anyone who has, or will have, a child attending Endeavor Hall for the 2012-2013 school year may run for office. Watch for more information on how to apply in our April newsletter.

Volunteer Opportunities

Has your child brought home an “A for Applebee’s” card yet? There are so many restaurants and businesses that give schools gift cards for free meals, treats or other rewards to use as incentives for our kids. We are looking for someone dynamic who will solicit these businesses and keep track of who is participating. If you are interested in helping, please leave a comment.

We are always looking for help with drop off and pick up traffic. If you can help even one time, please leave a comment.

Reminders

Has your child had a chance to join the Birthday Book Club? To celebrate their birthday, have them give a copy of their favorite book to our library. Or, ask our amazing librarian for a suggestion. Birthday Book Club labels are available in the front office and in the library. If you have questions about this “club,” please leave a comment.

There is always a Box Tops collection bin in the front lobby & our Green Fiber Recycling bin has plenty of room in it! These are easy ways to generate funds for our school.

Thank you for all you do! Have a stellar month!

Eraser Racer

The object of this game is for the eraser holder to get back to her seat without being tagged by the eraser racer.

Randomly choose a student to be the eraser holder. The eraser holder walks quietly about the room and gently places the eraser on another student’s head. This student is now the eraser racer.

The eraser racer and the eraser holder are now in a walking race to the holder’s desk. The eraser racer tries to walk quickly to the eraser holder’s desk and tag her before she sits down.

If the holder is tagged, she loses, and the eraser racer becomes a new eraser holder. If the holder makes it to her desk without being tagged, the eraser racer sits down and the holder chooses a new eraser holder. The game begins again.

The catch to the game is this. The eraser racer must keep the eraser balanced on his head through the entire race without touching it with his hands. If the eraser falls off, he must stop, place it back on his head, and continue the race.

With older students, the game may be played with up to four eraser holders and eraser racers. When more students play, it becomes harder to navigate around the room and tag holders, making it faster paced and more exciting

Alibi

The object of this game is to find the perpetrator of a crime.

Send one person out of the room. This person will be the detective. While the person waits outside the room, think of a simple crime. An example of a crime might be that someone stole the teacher’s lunch. Another example might be that someone broke the classroom CD player. Each of the students in the room must think of an alibi for where they were or what they were doing. It can be silly or serious.

Before the detective comes back into the room, choose a criminal. The criminal must think of another alibi, different from the first one, but similar enough to be confusing. For example, if one alibi is, “I was eating fries at the Burger Barn,” the second alibi might be, “I was eating fries at Burger King.”

Have the detective come into the room. The detective moves around the room, asking each student to state their alibi. The detective can ask students their alibis up to three times. All students except the criminal must repeat their alibis exactly the same every time. The criminal must "lie" and change her alibi each time she is asked.

If the detective suspects someone of committing the crime, he can accuse that student. If he guesses correctly, he wins that round, and he gets to choose the next detective. If he doesn’t win, the criminal confesses, and she becomes the next detective.

Four Corners

The object of this game is to be the last person standing.

Name the four corners of the classroom room before beginning the game. Examples of names are computer corner, art corner, door corner, teacher’s desk corner. Pick one student to be “It”.

The person who is “It” goes to the front of the room, and with eyes covered, slowly counts to ten. While the “It” is counting, the rest of the students quietly move to a corner of the room. All students must be in a corner by the time “It” finishes counting. Any students that are halfway between corners are out and must sit down at their desks.

“It” keeps his or her eyes covered, and calls out the name of a corner. All the students that are standing in that corner are out and must sit down at their desks. The game continues until only one student is left standing. That student becomes the new “It”.

Once the game is down to four or less students, make the rule that they must each choose a different corner. That ensures that there will always be one winner.

Do As I Say, Not As I Do

Pick one of your students (the leader) to stand at the front of the classroom while the rest of the group stands in an open space facing her. Tell the leader that she must try and confuse the other students by telling them to perform one action while she acts out another. For instance, while she tells the students to bounce on one foot, she rubs her stomach. The students all have to perform the action she tells them to perform. Any time a player performs the same action as the leader, he gets eliminated from the game. The last person standing, having only performed what the leader said throughout the game, wins.

Drawing Together

Prior to the start of the game, print out several copies of a simply drawn picture you can find on the Internet. Group your students into pairs and seat them down in their desks as they face each other. Put up a poster board or some other form of partition in between the pairs so they can no longer see each other. Hand one of the players---the leader---the picture and give the other player---the drawer---a piece of paper and a writing utensil. When you say "Go," the leaders have to give instructions to the drawers to recreate the picture. After about five minutes, tell everyone to stop and hold up their pictures. Survey them all and pick out which of the pairs did the best job working together based on the similarity of the recreated version of the picture to the original.

Bizz Buzz

One student goes first and says the number "one." Play continues around the circle with each player saying the subsequent number. The twist is that any number divisible by three is replaced by the word "bizz " and any number divisible by five is replaced by the word "buzz." Numbers divisible by both three and five become "bizz-buzz." When a player says "bizz-buzz," direction of play is reversed. Any player who makes a mistake is out and play starts over

Write For Laughs

To start, one person writes a silly sentence, then passes the paper to the second person. The second person folds the paper to hide the first sentence, writes a second sentence and passes the paper to the third person. This continues around the circle until the last player, who writes an "ending" to the story with only the previous sentence to go from.

Telephone Pictionary

Each person in the group gets a pencil and a piece of paper. Each person thinks of a simple sentence and writes it on the top piece of paper. Then each player passes her stack of paper with the sentence on top to the person on her left. That person must then move the top paper to the back of the stack and draw a picture on the second piece of paper to illustrate the sentence. The stack is passed again, with the next player writing a simple sentence based on the drawing he sees. Finally, each person shares how her sentence changed as it went around the circle.

Heads or Tails

Students stand up and place their hands on their heads or hips to indicate how they think a coin toss will wind up. The teacher flips a coin and if it lands heads up, those students with hands on their hips (or "tails") must sit down. Continue playing until one student remains.

Outburst

Divide the class into two or more equal teams. Provide each team with paper and pencil. Instruct the teams that they will be competing to brainstorm and write down as many words starting with a certain letter as they can in 30 seconds. Repeat with different letters (try "harder" letters such as "Q" or "Z") to find the winner of two out of three

Zoom & Re-Zoom

  • This engaging group activity helps develop communication skills, perspective taking, and problem solving skills.
  • This game is based on the intriguing, wordless, picture books "Zoom" and "Re-Zoom" by Istvan Banyai which consist of 30 sequential "pictures within pictures". The Zoom narrative moves from a rooster to a ship to a city street to a desert island and outer space. Zoom has been published in 18 countries. The Re-Zoom narrative moves from an Egyptian hieroglyphic to a film set to an elephant ride to a billboard to a train.
  • To create the game from the book, separate the picture pages of the book into one page sheets and laminate or place in clear plastic sleeves to protect them and prolong usage.
  • Hand out one picture per person (make sure a continuous sequence is used).
  • Explain that participants may only look at their own pictures and must keep their pictures hidden from others.
  • Encourage participants to study their picture, since it contains important information to help solve a problem.
  • The challenge is for the group to sequence the pictures in the correct order without looking at one another's pictures.
  • Participants will generally mill around talking to others to see whether their pictures have anything in common. Sometimes leadership efforts will emerge to try to understand the overall story.
  • When the group believes they have all the pictures in order (usually after ~15 minutes), the pictures can be turned over for everyone to see.

Squeeze My Hand

This activity works especially well for large groups. First, you must divide into two lines of equal numbers. These people need to be standing with legs spread out and hands held. One one end of the line you need a chair with a tennis ball on it. On the other side of the line you need a volunteer to stand with a coin. This "referee's" job is to hold the coin and flip it. It is the job of the two people in the front of the line (who are the only ones who have their eyes open) to look at the coin and if it is heads up, they need to silently squeeze the next person in line's hand. Then that person squeezes the next person's hand all the way to the end of the line. The last person must pick up the tennis ball, and the winning team gets a point. If a team picks up the ball without having heads or at the wrong time, they will lose a point. All players' eyes should be shut with the exception of the referee and the first one in line. It may be a good idea to use blindfolds so no cheating occurs. Also, if you want, you can rotate first person by having the front person move to the end of the line after each game so everyone gets a chance at the beginning and at the end.

Meet Me Bingo

Everyone knows how to play regular bingo, but this type of bingo has a twist that makes it perfect for kids who are just getting to know each other. Either give students bingo cards or have them create their own. On the bingo cards, they need phrases, such as, "I speak two languages," or " I don't like to watch t.v." or "My favorite food is chicken." The job of the students is to go around the room and interview people about the phrases on their bingo board so that they can be the first to call "Bingo!" This is fun and gets the students up and moving.

Compliments Game

This is a great activity to do with children after they have had a few weeks to get to know each other. Each student will have a piece of paper that they will write their name on. Put the papers on the desks. The students then will rotate seats until they have the chance to visit every other student's desk and paper. While they are at each desk, they are to write a compliment to that person. They are not to write anything mean. Share lots of examples with students because they are typically not familiar with giving compliments to one another and may have some difficulty coming up with unique compliments. Often you hear, "You're a great friend," or "You're nice." Teach the students how to elaborate on these concepts. This is a keepsake for children that they will treasure, the kind compliments from their classmates. The teacher can participate too. It feels great!

Never Have I Ever

This is a fun game that kids will enjoy. Have everyone sit in a circle. Have students hold their hands and all ten fingers out on the floor in front of them. As you go around the circle, each student will tell something that they have never done before. For example, they might say, "Never have I ever eaten strawberry ice cream." If the other players have done that event, they must remove a finger. Therefore, it is a good strategy for students to say things that most people have done but they haven't. This can be a fun and humorous game that will allow the children to learn about each other.

Koosh Ball

1. Everyone stands in a circle. One person starts by throwing the koosh ball to another person.

2. Continue passing the ball around so that everyone gets the ball once. The ball should end up with the person who started it.

3. Remember the order and then time how fast the group can get the ball through everyone.

4. See if the group can beat their fastest time!
